1964 Senate

President Kennedy has been assassinated. The Senate Republicans after a huge blowout in 1958 have been in 1960 and 1962 just keeping parity and trying to avoid becoming irrelevant. Senator Dirksen’s Republicans had nominated and targeted in a number of seats popular Republican candidates. Then Senator Goldwater’s far right candidacy allows him to be nominated for President. Now it’s a race to avoid losing what Senate seats are up and hopefully gain just a few more if it falls just right. Meanwhile, President Johnson wants as many seats available to enact his GREAT SOCIETY program. It begins with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

1962 Senate

It’s the dawn of the New Frontier for the first time at the ballot box since the very close 1960 Presidential election. In this scenario you can command Mike Mansfield and the Senate Democrats to protect the momentum for the New Frontier. Or you can be Everett M. Dirksen and try to recapture a decent number of Republican seats. It will be a mountain to recover enough seats (15) to control the U.S. Senate after the landslide for the Democrats in 1958. With 21 Democratic seats up you will have to maintain your 18 seats and then capture the lion’s share of the Democrats. It’s not undoable but will take some serious targeting and use of resources.
