UK-1992

After thirteen years in office, it looks like Conservative rule in the UK might finally be coming to an end. Having replaced Margaret Thatcher three years previously, the new Prime Minister, John Major, has had to face economic difficulties and divisions within his party as he attempts to keep the ToriesĀ in power. Is now the time for Neil Kinnock’s Labour to take back power after over a decade in the wilderness? Or will the Conservatives win an unlikely victory? And can either win an outright majority, so as not to be dependent on Paddy Ashdown’s Lib Dems?

  1. You know what, we keep getting the same scenarios – 1983, 1987, 1992, 1997, etc.

Why not put up 1955 (Atlee v. Eden), 1964 (Douglas-Home v. Wilson), the 1966 and 1970 battles of (Wilson v. Heath), or earlier with the Churchill races? Maybe 1945 (Atlee v. Churchill)???

  2. The thing about the 1980s-1990s is that they were require minimal boundary editing, which increases the work load by quite a bit. 1997 has been requested by a number of people, and it also feels kind of appropriate given the recent anniversary, so I am going to give that a go first.

After that, however, I am going to look at doing the two Attlee vs Churchill elections in 1950/51. Then, if I still have an appetite to do more, anything is possible. I’d also like to get a 2005 scenario done, but other than that, I haven’t really considered what would come next, though it would likely be something between the 1950s and the 1970s. The trouble with anything before that is there is both a lack of material (logos and leader pictures for minor parties) and the problem of multi member constituencies, which are difficult to model.

  3. Fantastic scenario, would be great if you could do ’97, 1974’s elections and the 1975 EEC Referendum would be a really fun scenario too! Keep up the great work

  4. @Drew Pritt

Aren’t you the guy who stole money from disabled veterans in Alaska?

  5. I thought you would release 97 on the anniversary is there any kind of schedule (Don’t rush).

  6. I was going to aim for 20 years to the month, rather than the day, seeing as I have only just started on it. I should be able to get it done in that time, it just depends on how successful I am at identitfying all the boundary changes, as they appear to have been a little more extensive than I had first presumed.

  7. This is amazing I would love to see a 1997 and 2017 scenario at some point and also possibly a 2001 and 2005. if not idk make australian scenarios

  8. Seeing as 2017 is going to be covered as an official scenario, I’m gonna leave that one for now. 1997 is up next though, and 2005 is also in the pipeline.

  9. I actually really enjoy doing these elections- they’re much more relevant, have boundaries that I actually understand, and are well more enjoyable.

  10. Brown will be in there, but I didn’t include Mandelson since he was never really seriously seen as a candidate for the leadership at any point in those five years, and there are already many who were in that time. I have actually already completed the leader section, so here is a quick run down of the additional leaders:

Conservative: Major, Clarke, Portillo, Howard, Redwood, Heseltine, Rifkind,

Labour: Blair, Smith, Gould, Livingstone, Prescott, Beckett, Brown, Cook, and Kinnock

Lib Dem: Ashdown, Beith, Kennedy, Campbell, and Hughes

  11. Could you include Thatcher in the Tory candidates? That could be an interesting scenario.

  12. I will try and remember to add her back in. She was in the 1992 list, as I recall, but I had removed her for 1997.

  13. Thank you! Yes she was in 1992 but it would also be great to see her in 1997 as an alternative history sort of thing.

  14. ’97 should hopefully be on its way in the next week. After that, I have plans for 1950 and 1951 scenarios that will require a total constituency revamp, so I anticipate that taking a month or so. After that, I hadn’t really thought about what I would do if I still wanted to do more. Obviously there are still a bunch of elections between then and 1979 that I haven’t done, but they were mostly ones in which relatively few seats changed hands (even if power switched) and don’t feel all that exciting to me for some reason. Maybe I’ll do one of those, or maybe I’ll overlook my misgivings about doing anything pre-1950 and do 1945, or maybe one of the elections in the ten years after WW1. I had even thought about the possibility of doing a London Mayoral Scenario on President Infinity now we have popular vote, but we’ll have to see how the two round system works before I make a decision on that one. I am not too sure about doing referendums, they have a whole load of variables that are different from elections that would be difficult to model in an election scenario.

  15. alot of these scenarios have been made on prime minister forever if we could just find a way to convert them

  16. I really think that this 1992 scenario was brilliant. I’ve played it probably about fifty times, at least. Then, I created new candidates from “House of Cards” and “A Very British Coup” for it (since it’s in approximately the same time period as both programs), and it’s been really fun finding out what might have happened if Uruqhart had gone up against Perkins!
